I read about a book a day and after a while, you pick up a book and start and have to question -- have I read this book before cause this really sounds familiar. So I was really excited when the ideas in The Calling were so fresh and different from 'the norm'. Your quite a ways in to the book and still trying to decipher what it all means so the author keeps you guessing. I found Mandy's struggle with breast cancer and how she reacted to others and others reacted to her to be real and felt it brought meaning to Mandy's character. Mandy's indecision at times about Ty and his intentions, as well as her strong ties to Justin helped develop a good plot line. The loves scenes were pretty steamy and again written with a fresh view. The author has a flair for well written action scenes and did her research to make the sea rescues real. The ending was a real nail biter and I definitely didn't want to put the book down. Great Job!Very well edited. Everything appeared correctly on my KFHD. I highly recommend both the author, Ashley Lynn Willis, and The Calling.
I highly recommend this book. It definately wasn't steeped in paranormal

The Calling edition by Ashley Lynn Willis Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews
This is a paranormal novel, but it's mostly a romance/chick-lit book. The guy is son of Triton. Not Poseidon, but Triton is good enough. So it's basically mythology. I'd recommend it for all the chick lit fans ). 18+
The characters are, for the most part, pretty normal. You have your fellow hot, built, chiseled and all that (supernatural) guy protagonist who's a Coast Guard. Then, you have your fellow beautiful breast cancer surviving female protagonist. And they've got the hots for each other (as always).
There's not really action, but there is some drama. Ya know, the crazy psychotic ex-boyfriend type. Then, there's something you don't really expect, but the epilogue is wonderful enough for me ).
The Calling
I really liked Justin. When he said he loved Mandy he meant it. No backing down. No second thoughts. Completely committed. They made her boyfriend a twirl your mustashe villian. It didn't make any sense that he could be that disturbed and no one had a clue. Mandy was ok. I totally understood her fear and doubts about Justin toward the end. How she resolved her doubts was contrived and silly. I thought the explanation of "the calling" was also silly. The race to save their lives was meant to be suspenseful but was more like "will this book never end?" They also had some pretty hot and steamy sex.
A small amount of paranormal. A very sexy man who has loved her for a long time. Unfortunately, she chose the wrong man. Mandy is a breast cancer survivor who got abandoned by her fiance after the news. She is now back on her feet and has the fortune to encounter Justin again. Justin is her ex fiance's friend or so she thinks. Needless to say after the misunderstandings are cleared, we find a romance between Mandy and Justin.
I enjoyed the story. The sex was hot and sweet. Did not like her ex at all. Mandy had a few moments I wanted to shake out of her, but all in all was a great read. 4.5 stars
I really enjoyed reading this book. I thought the female character, Mandy, was written so beautifully and her story of strength and courage touched me. The paranormal touch of this story brought a wonderful side to Mandy & Justin's story. It was written extremely well with both characters being dealt dire circumstances in the beginning to come out on the other side strong individuals and together, a strong couple. It was one of the best paranormal stories I have read. It was about two extraordinary people trying to live a normal life together. I would recommend you read this book. It will leave you with a wonderful feeling.
I thought the amount of paranormal in it was fine. It was light and would've enjoyed seeing a little more, but it wasn't so light I didn't enjoy it as a paranormal romance.
I did like that rather than fighting some paranormal monster, it was real people fighting their own inner demons and finding true love in the process.
I enjoyed the tension the author built near the end as well. I think maybe Mandy over reacted a bit with what happened on the beach, but nothing too bad. I like that the main characters didn't have that "I hate you so much that I can't wait to fall in the sack with you" type relationship that plagues so many romances.
I felt the antagonist was well done. I do think that part of the book moved a little too fast. I think she could have built the tension around that a little more. But still it was good.
Despite the little things mentioned above, I really enjoyed reading this book and it will be a keeper on my that I will likely read again.
"The Calling" is a beautiful romantic novel about two people, each dealing with serious issues on their own. It is with their love for each other as it grows that they're able to share and help each other deal with their problems. To make the story more interesting, elements of paranormal is thrown in, but it's not the central theme of the novel. If you're looking to read a novel about good vs. evil, there's none of that in this novel. It's vastly different from all the other paranormal books I've read. Oh, there's also the ex-boyfriend that comes into play that does his best to break the couple apart.
What really made this novel enjoyable for me was Justin. What an amazing guy! He never gave up on Mandy. He was so great for her. You could really feel the love he felt for her. I just kept rooting for him throughout it all. He never gave up on their love. There was so much passion between the two.
I look forward to reading more novels by this author.
