I have most of Elizabeth Lowell's books and I like them well enough to reread them from time to time. On rare occasions she writes a real clunker, and she occasionally writes a book that is not bad, but is not great. "Night Diver" falls into the latter category.

A number of other reviewers have expressed opinions that are the same as mine. There was not a lot of character development. The H and h were likeable characters and there was the potential to develop them more fully, but they were not. We caught only superficial glimpses of them. There was a bit too much time spent on mundane issues, such as the diving, and not enough on the H and h and on their relationship.

The book did lag in spots and felt slow, again because there was too much emphasis on things like diving, boating, shopping and eating. All of those activities would have been fine, if they had been balanced by more character development. In other books, Ms. Lowell was able to include a lot of information on things like jewellery, gemstones, and textiles, but integrated it so well within the story that it did not take over and slow things down. In those books, the information was interesting and seemed integral to the plot. In this book, the information seemed more like filler.

Overall, there seemed to be a lack of passion in this book. I don't mean in sexual terms, but in emotional terms. Ms. Lowell has written heroes and heroines who are colourful, passionate and full of life. The settings and plots reinforce that passion. There is tension and passion in the conflicts. In this book, however, everything feels very slightly flat.

Ms. Lowell writes very well, and this book almost reaches her usual quality. Almost, but not quite. It is certainly not a bad book. It is just average, though, and her fans have come to expect more than average from Ms. Lowell. I usually can't put down one of her books, but I had no trouble setting this one aside to do something else.

Night Diver A Novel Elizabeth Lowell 9780062132826 Books Reviews

A family tragedy sent teenage Kate Donnelly running from the only life she’d known, the life she loved unconditionally until the ocean took her beloved parents. She left behind a grandfather and an older brother, Larry, to pick up the pieces of a once thriving salvage operation aboard the Golden Bough.

Over the years she kept her personal vow to stay away. Kate made a new life for herself until the day an impassioned phone call from Larry begging for help brings her full circle and back to the island of Saint Vincent. At the same time Holden Cameron also arrives on the island. The decorated military diver was forced to retire due to injuries and now works for Her Majesties Government Antiquities Office. It will be Holden’s job to ascertain whether to shut down the salvage operation immediately or give the captain of the Golden Bough more rope to financially hang.

The Donnelly ship is anchored over the Moon Rose, a pirate ship rumored to be filled with treasure though very little has been found thus far. Either the wreck is a bust or someone is helping themselves on their own time. From the moment they meet the sexual tension between Kate and Holden is palpable, added spice is the mystery of whether there’s a treasure to be found. If anyone is stealing it must be a Donnelly, every clue they unearth points to Larry or Grandpa. The clock is ticking and a hurricane is barreling down on them just to make things even more interesting…

Night Diver is simply…wow! Author Elizabeth Lowell knows exactly how to draw the reader in with cleverly constructed word building, a multi-layered plotline, and most importantly characters who grow and adapt. Even the most land locked reader will feel the neoprene suits and the bubbles and understand what’s happening. Kate is a delight, Holden is absolutely luscious. As Night Diver unfolds the mysteries begin, the red herrings, and the dropped crumbs. Then the climax twists, turns, and explodes. The real treasure is reading Night Diver.
